Job Description: The Shaw Group provides premier engineering, design, construction, and maintenance services to government and private-sector clients in a wide array of industries, including the energy, environmental, infrastructure, and emergency response markets.
Summary: Lead Designers at this level supervise large teams of Drafters and Designers and, potentially, multiple teams of Drafters and Designers in multiple office locations. They also establish company standards in conjunction with Engineering.
Responsibilities: - Supervise larger teams of Drafters and Designers - Perform any Designer functions of previous levels such as 2D and 3D drafting using AutoCAD, Microstation, and 3D PDS. - Ensure interdisciplinary and management review, check, and approval of design deliverables - Contribute to maintenance of company standards in conjunction with Engineering - Review and update discipline design guidelines and standards - Select and modify corporate standard details to reflect project specific requirements - Plan and schedule team activities - Work with clients on conceptual design - Estimate drawing quantities for design deliverables - Develop budget requirements (i.e., time and materials) - Monitor team performance and budget compliance (e.g., drawing and material quantity production rates) - Develop and forecast staffing - Coordinate with CAE in development of computer software set up - Develop and maintain drawing list - Gather and review applicable codes, standards, and vendor requirements to define installation requirements, and communicate requirements to design team - Review and comment on vendor drawings - Analyze options to optimize cost and scheduling - Compare budgeted, designed, and forecasted electrical bulk quantities - Supervise project closeout including as-built documentation - Ensure compliance with client and Shaw requirements - Capture and communicate best practices with department leads - Determine and plan training and development of team personnel - Coordinate project activities across multiple office locations - Provide Instrumentation & Control interface as required - Conceptually identify interface requirements for existing facility - Knowledge of safety requirements for field assignments Qualifications/Competencies/Experience: Typically has 2-10 years relevant supervisory experience plus 8-10 years design experience. - Ability to perform supervisory responsibilities (e.g., plan, schedule, and monitor progress of team activities; forecast staffing; participate in performance evaluations; identify personnel training and development needs) - Ability to estimate drawing quantities and budgets - Ability to estimate materials quantities - Expert knowledge of Electrical design and installation practices - Knowledge of scheduling methods and tools - Knowledge of appropriate performance measurement attributes - Proficient with internal filing system to be able to locate required documentation - Expert knowledge of typical Electrical design criteria - Ability to review and understand the Electrical portions of the client contract - Knowledge of Project Engineering Plan - Ability to coordinate design and team activities with other design disciplines and other offices - Ability to review and understand vendor drawings - Expert knowledge of policies, procedures, codes, and standards - Ability to execute the design using approved software and tools - Awareness of hazardous area requirements - Knowledge of ISA standards, NFPA 70 (NEC), and OSHA regulations - Knowledge of technical drawing practices and the ability to confirm information provided by vendors meet corporate and project specific requirements - Knowledge of design team roles and responsibilities - Knowledge of safety requirements for field assignments - Knowledge of site hazards and corporate safety practices - Ability to execute the design using a broad range of software and tools - Ability to act as a liaison between engineering, construction, and start up disciplines - Knowledge of project CAE implementation plan - All Drafter technical competencies
